Relaunching agriculture (Shabunda)

Description

The project began in December 2007 with the establishment of a management team comprising an agricultural engineer and a group of farm workers. The project includes, among others the installation of a manioc grinder in Shabunda and Kalima).

The project pursues the following objectives

  • Increasing agricultural production by introducing improved seeds (purchased from INERA, the Bukavu agronomic institute).
  • Rehabilitate the socio-economic activities of the population of Shabunda, who live mainly from agriculture.
  • Ensuring sufficient, good-quality food.
  • Set up seed fields for mosaic-resistant manioc, sweet potatoes, maize, amaranths and aubergines.
  • Distribute agricultural inputs, improved seeds and farming tools to targeted farmers.

As planned, the long-term viability of the project is ensured by the system of retrocession: 25-30% of the harvests are retroceded by the beneficiaries so that they can be used as starting seeds for another group of the population. In addition, improved seeds are redistributed informally and out of solidarity to families who are not part of the project.
